Chapter Seventeen

After dropping yet another turpentine-soaked rag into the garbage bag in the bathtub, I assessed my face in the mirror and sighed. The hair would be harder. Luckily, I was due for a trim. I reached for the manicure scissors.

Emy, Lorne, and I had been swaddled in blankets when the television crew arrived, so I hoped our appearance on the television news later today would be brief. Twitter, on the other hand, was wriggling with delight over the report that a skeleton had been found at the same church as Nesbitt-Cavanagh’s body. “Reverend Dan” was the target of indignant rage, with the most popular hashtag being #deadlyvicar.

Fortunately, among the online photos of police officers and white-suited forensic teams going in and out of the church, there was only one blurry photo of me. I looked dazed and underdressed. The tweet beneath read, Local landscaper involved in another murder case? #deadlygardener #LeafyHollowLegend #bluepanties.

At least Emy’s leopard print hadn’t made it onto Twitter—yet. I set the scissors down on the counter with a frown. Xavier filmed our entire encounter with the police, starting from the time we stepped out of the vestry. I was grateful he hadn’t sold the footage to the Strathcona TV station, but given that he’d been fired from the Leafy Hollow documentary, that only raised another question.

Why didn’t he?
